Before Anli Pollicino embarked on their first European tour, JaME had the opportunity to interview the quintet, who spoke freely about the band, their music and the tour.

At first, Anli Pollicino's European tour came as a surprise to most visual kei fans because the band isn't very well known overseas. The organisers of the tour chose them from amongst numerous bands and announced them as the discovery of the year. For this reason, JaME felt that it was necessary to get to know the band and asked them some questions before the tour began.
Shindy: I’m the vocalist, Shindy.
Yohichi: I’m the guitarist, Yohichi.
Kiyozumi: I’m the drummer, Kiyozumi.
Takuma: I’m the guitarist; Takuma.
Masatoshi: I’m the bassist; Masatoshi.
Can you tell us why you started the band? How did you meet each other?
Shindy: I met Kiyozumi in a live house, and we hit it off and created a band. I wasn’t satisfied with the skills of our first guitarist and bassist and considered creating another band. So, I urged Takuma to join the band and then invited Yohichi. Finally, Masatoshi, who had been playing bass at our lives as a support member, became an official member in August, and we became our present form.
Where are you from? Did that place influence your music?
All: We are all from Tokyo.
Shindy: I’m not sure whether we were influenced by the city, but we were influenced by people we met in Tokyo who loved music. By this, I mean that we might not be making music now if we hadn't been born in Tokyo.
How did you decide on the band’s name?
Shindy: Many visual kei bands have strong names including the syllables “ga” or “gu,” but I thought names that sounded rather weak were more fashionable. And I thought names with the sound “po” sound quite weak. I saw the word "Pollicino" - an Italian mafia’s name - in a magazine, and I decided to use it. However, I thought it lacked in fashion even though it sounded weak enough, and so I decided to put "Anli" in front. I think it’s good because it sounds like a fashionable Italian brand to our Japanese sense. I’m sorry it’s so vague. (laughs)
Do you have a special policy for Anli Pollicino?
Shindy: We want to pursue music that we believe in and not be influenced by trends.
Please explain what kind of music Anli Pollicino is doing for people who don’t know you yet.
Shindy: We basically do loud and emotional music, but we treasure melodies. I have never made music based on the feelings of pleasure and happiness. I’m attracted to sad and sorrowful feelings. We make music in which we mix such delicate emotions with violence.
What prompted you to start singing or play an instrument?
Shindy: My father and mother worked in the music business, and so naturally I played instruments and sang. But I didn’t think I would become a rock singer. I listened to Billy Joel and Diana Ross. (laughs)
Yohichi: I wanted to be recognized by people.
Kiyozumi: My elder brother played in a band, and when I saw their rehearsal I was very moved. I was especially attracted to the drums.
Takuma: I had an opportunity to play the guitar in my junior high school, and I have been playing it since then.
Masatoshi: I saw my friend play guitar and I started playing the guitar as well. Then, I saw another friend of mine playing the bass. I got interested in it and got to know the deepness of the bass, and I mainly play the bass now.
Is Anli Pollicino the first band for you? Or do you have experience playing in other bands?
Shindy: It's my second band.
Yohichi: My fourth band.
Kiyozumi: My third band.
Takuma: My second band.
Masatoshi: My fourth band.
Last year, you recorded your first mini album Fahrenheit 31. How was that? What did you gain from that experience?
Shindy: It was an opportunity to look back at my songs. I think my way of singing has changed a lot if I compare it before and after the recording.
Yohichi: I learned very much as I noticed that I used to be so lax about the particularity of how to make sounds, and about my guitar playing too.
Kiyozumi: It was a good opportunity to look over the identity of the band and the total ensemble again.
Takuma: Other than my guitar playing techniques, I learned more about recording techniques such as adding sounds.
Masatoshi: Before, I think I listened only to my sounds. But I learned to listen to the other members’ sounds well.
Fahrenheit 31 will be released in Europe soon. Please tell us a little about album. Does it have a concept or special theme?
Shindy: This album has a rich variety of different expressions from song to song, from hard songs to mellow melodic songs. As I said before, it’s an album showing Anli Pollicino being hard and delicate at the same time.
You are a rather new band which debuted recently, and doing an European tour already seems special. How did you get this opportunity?
Shindy: A French promoter happened to listen to our music and liked us, and they made it possible for us to do the tour. I don’t know why, but we have often been liked by the European people, even though we have just started playing in Japan.
Shindy: It’s our first time playing overseas, so I’m looking forward to what we will feel and how we could grow through this tour.
What do you want to do, and where do you want to go on this tour?
Shindy: I want to walk along the Seine river.
Yohichi: I want to go to a hot spring.
Kiyozumi: I want to see the Arc de Triomphe.
Takuma: I want to go shopping.
Masatoshi: We said that if we went to Japan, then we want to see Tokyo Tower and Mt. Fuji. (laughs)
What kind of presents are you glad to receive from fans? What are you annoyed to receive?
Shindy: I’m glad to receive cosmetic goods. They help me. (laughs) Fan letters that are too serious would bother me?
Yohichi: I’m glad to receive cosmetic goods. Nothing especially annoys me.
Kiyozumi: I’m happy if I get cigarettes and money. (laughs) Nothing especially annoys me.
Takuma: I’m glad if I get cigarettes and fan letters.
Masatoshi: I appreciate uncured ham and Red Bull. I'm annoyed by big ornaments and toys. I can’t throw them away and they occupy space.
The magazine Rock One and Gekido Tour, a tour organizer, described Anli Pollicino as the best new band. How do you think Anli Pollicino is different from other bands? What is the speciality of Anli Pollicino?
Shindy: I think the personality of each member and the personality of the band as a whole are quite different from other visual kei bands. I gathered the members and I tried to make us different from other visual kei bands. So, we might not look visual kei at all.
Takuma: I think it’s good that the personality of each member is different.
Shindy: I gathered only strange people, so our band became strange. (laughs)
SINCREA belongs to the same label as you. Do you know them well?
All: We know them well. We appeared in the same events several times, and go for drinks together sometimes.
Who are the musicians who impressed and influenced you?
Shindy: Sebastian Bach (SKID ROW), Amy Lee (Evanescence) and Marilyn Manson.
Yohichi: Jimi Hendrix and Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme).
Kiyozumi: Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER) and DEAD END.
Takuma: HIDE (X JAPAN), Paul Gilbert (Mr.Big) and Yngwie Malmsteen.
Masatoshi: LED ZEPPELIN and SLIP KNOT.
Please tell us a humorous story of another member.
Shindy: I heard that Yohichi doesn’t bathe for 2-3 days after lives. When Masatoshi gets drunk, he orders people to say "do" (refers to the musical note C).
Masatoshi: When Takuma drinks alcohol, he becomes a dragon. Takuma becomes a demon, akuma. Kiyozumi makes strange noises as he hits the drums. He shouts like Maria Sharapova, the tennis player. Shindy is sensitive to the cold, and once he tried to warm his body with a hair-dryer and got burned.
Shindy: We’ll do performances and put our souls with all our might in our lives, so please come to see our lives.

What is the difference between Japanese and French audience ?
Shindy : The French audience's reactions are more opened. We can clearly see that they are having fun during the show.
What are you expecting from the showcase of June 2nd at Fnac store in Champs-Elysées, Paris ?
Shindy : The festival we were supposed to play at was canceled (Furia Sound Festival, Cergy). We were disappointed as we really wanted to play in Paris. So we've been given the opportunity to make this showcase. By the way, it will be done in an extremely short time. This will really be a new experience. Regarding the parisian audience, we are affraid about the sound we'll provide to them. Do we have to stay ourselves and go thoroughly or not ?

You are a visual kei band, what do you think about this label? What is visual kei in your opinion?
Shindy : This is not making us upset to be considered as a visual kei band, because we do think we are one, and we are proud about it!
Visual kei is a part of Japanese culture. This is like a tradition of same level than kabuki is. (traditional Japanese theater)
What is the meaning behind the title of your mini-album Fahrenheit 31 ?
Shindy : I wanted to use a German word but I finally decided to name it Fahrenheit 31. This is the temperature at which ice starts to melt. This is the symbol of a beginning.
What is your main inspiration in writing and song composing?
Takuma : I am the main composer of the band. Sometimes, Yo-1 and Masatoshi are working on composition it as well.
My inspiration is stress. For example, when something bad is happening, I feel stress and I am very productive during those times.
Shindy : I am in charge of lyrics. I take inspiration from sorrow, sadness or any other emotions like them to create. I write lyrics after that the music has been composed, so I take my inspiration from the images that it sends back to me. I cannot be inspired by happiness.

What are the artists and bands who inspires you?
Takuma : hide from X-Japan.
Kyozumi : An old Japanese band : Dead End and Janne da Arc.
Shindy : Sebastien Bach (singer of Skid Row) and Marylin Manson.
Masatoshi : Flea (Michael Balzary, bassist of Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and Slipknot.
Yo-1 : Nuno Bettencourt (guitarist from Extreme) and Jimi Hendrix
How much time does it take to create a song?
Shindy : In the groupe, we compose the music forst, and we then write the lyrics.
Takuma : Creation time is quite variable. I can compose a melody in one hour. Sometimes, it can take more time.
Shindy : It takes me two days to write. The first day, I write the lyrics by taking inspiration from the music. I feel the images from it. On the second day, I sing them onto the melody. Then, the whole band gathers to make arrangements, which takes about one day.

What is the hard part of your job ?
Shindy : There is a lot of stress.
Masatoshi : The hardest thing is, that we are a group. We have to cooperate. We all have our ideas about music. It is often easy to know what we want, but sometimes, we have different opinions.
Are you preparing a new album? If you are, could you reveal some informations about it?
Shindy : We are, indeed, preparing a new album. Some tracks of the tour's setlist, like Last Tears and 寸劇 Raspberry (Sungeki Raspberry), will be part of it. This completely is a new information, nobody knows it yet!
There is alsoライオン製薬 (Lion Seiyaku) that is a new song that haven't been played in Japan. Only European knows it. This is a completely new song and its title is provisional. We did not found its real title but the song will remain the same in the album.
The album will be out during next autumn, probably in september. We are trying to make its release available at the same time in France and Japan.
After this European tour, what are your projects?
Shindy : We are going back to Japan. We still have some shows to do and we will end this tour in Tokyo, 4th of July. Come and see us!

How did you decide on the name Anli Pollicino?
Shindy: The time when we started this band, names like "the Gazette" and "Dir en grey" were popular. Such names have impact and they sound cool too, but we wanted to break that image and make up a totally different name. At that time the name "Pollicino" hit us. Not a Japanese, English or French name, but Italian name instead which would be unusual. Furthermore, if we would add the name "Anli", it would sound like a brand name, which would be amusing. We decided to create a new brand (musical one), and that is how the name "Anli Pollicino" was made.
How did you all meet?
Kiyozumi: Everything started when I met Shindy in a live house in Tokyo. Shindy and I kept contacting each other since then and Anli Pollicino started to form when we asked Shindy's old band members, Yo-1 and Takuma, to join us. Masatoshi was the last one to join the band, first as a support bassist.
If you could be any other member of the band who would you be?
Shindy: I wouldn't want to be anyone of them (laughs).
Takuma: Kiyozumi. Because he is always eating delicious things.
Yo-1: I would like to try being Masatoshi and perform a live as him. Reason is his growling singing voice and the head banging he does. Those are skills that I could never master myself(laughs).
Masatoshi: Takuma. The reason is that I want to know how it feels like playing those guitar solos.
Kiyozumi: Takuma. I would like to try to play an instrument like a violin once.
What are the worst traits of each member?
Shindy: Alcohol is not good for Takuma. Yo-1 tend to be careless. Masatoshi is noisy in a tour bus. Kiyozumi talks a lot of perverted things.
Takuma: Shindy gets irritated if he can't do things at his own pace. Yo-1 won't hear people talking if he is concentrated on something. Masatoshi's tension changes violently. Kiyozumi is a little bit dull sometimes.
Yo-1: Sometimes Shindy is not on time on meetings. Once Takuma has fallen asleep, he won't woke up no matter what you do. Masatoshi always makes fun of me. Kiyozumi's worst part is his driving. He is such a speeder.
Masatoshi: Why are you are not asking about the best traits!(;-;) Shindy is very emotional in a bad but also good way. But lately he has been quite calm! It is impossible to wake up Takuma if he falls asleep (laughs.) When Yo-1 is concentrated on something he won't hear a thing. Kiyozumi won't get mad no matter what. There are good and bad sides about that...
Kiyozumi: All of them arrive later than me in rehearsals!
What is the best and worst part about being in Anli Pollicino?
Shindy: The best part being in Anli Pollicino is that I have been able to come across many people and the fact that I have been able to be deeply moved by many things. The worst part is being always busy due to release deadlines and live shows, so I hardly have any time to relax on my free time.
Takuma: The best part is the music that five of us are making together. There is no worst part.
Yo-1: Everybody in Anli Pollicino has passion for music, and that is something you can sense during a live performance. But the strength of that passion always causes troubles while we are throwing a party between band members.
Masatoshi: The best parts are the feeling you have achieved something when a new song is finished, and the feeling during live shows when you feel you have gotten better in playing. And of course I were able to do the European tour because I am in Anli Pollicino (laughs). The worst part is lack of sleeping hours. This band is seriously in a need of a good sleep (laughs).
Kiyozumi: Being in Anli Pollicino, you are able to see all member's individualities very clearly. During the live shows tension is very high! There is no other bad things expect other members arriving late to the rehearsals...
If you weren't in the band, what would you be working as?
Shindy: I think that being in this band is a fate so I don't really know(laughs). But I wanted to become a journalist when I was a child.
Takuma: I guess I would have ended up being an alcoholic or a junkie. It would be impossible for me to work normally as a company employee or something like that(laughs).
Yo-1: I would be a chef or a novelist. If it weren't for a music, I would still be "making" something.
Masatoshi: Something related to social work.
Kiyozumi: I guess I would be keeping a hotel! I like to communicate with people.
How would you describe the band to someone who has never listened to your music?
Shindy: Destructively emotional, sensually melodic. Delicate rock that is about to break.
Takuma: We know how to combine love and grief.
Yo-1: If you would listen to Anli Pollicino's music, you would be able to take a trip to a fantasy world. Anyway, it is hard to explain so I want you to listen to our CD once!
Masatoshi: Extremely hot band! Well I am in it (laughs).
Kiyozumi: Exceptional melody and thickness of the sound are Anli Pollicino's weapons! If you haven't heard Anli Pollicino yet, please give it a try!
In 2010 you completed a European tour, what are you best memories and worst memories from this?
Shindy: The best memory is the moment when I realized that there are many Anli fans, boys and girls, in such distant places supporting us. The worst memory is a huge fight between members in Paris. As a result hotel's window was smashed (laughs). Well, now we are able to laugh at the very Anli-like matter(laughs).
Takuma: The best part was being able to see different countries and cultures, and the fact we had the most supreme audience at the concerts. The worst part was the very tight schedule.
Yo-1: The best part was being able to perform in many countries and communicate with fans of many nationals. I guess the worst part was a fight between band members in Paris...
Masatoshi: Naturally, the best memories were made when I were able to meet people from many different countries. It was great to make Anli Pollicino known in many countries, too. The worst memories are many hours spent in a tour buss and food (after all, it is hard for Japanese person to live without rise...) and the fact that I got tired of looking at other members faces (laughs).
Kiyozumi: The best memory is the passion of the people who came to see our shows! Tension was very high during the shows. And it was great to see different cities and beautiful landscapes. And there were so many different beers! The worst memory is when we went to eat out in a Japanese restaurant and the food tasted strange. I learned to appreciate Japanese food more!
How did you get into music?
Shindy: I started playing a piano when I was 3 years-old. I started playing in a cover band when I was 13 years-old with my junior high school friends.
Takuma: My motive to start playing music was a violin that I used to play when I was small. My motive to start playing in a band was a certain anniversary live that I saw during junior high school.
Yo-1: My motive for starting music was the fact that I was invited by a childhood friend to a band in the role of a vocalist.
Masatoshi: I used to watch my friend playing a guitar. At first I was a bit disappointed that acoustic guitar couldn't make a much of a rock sound (laughs).
Kiyozumi: I started to play music influenced by my friend who owned a studio. I also saw their band playing live and I was so impressed that I wanted to start a band too.
What is the first record you remember hearing from when you were young?
Shindy: Billy Joel's Piano Man.
Takuma: It was some kind of a classical music record.
Yo-1: It was a recorded tape of Dragonball Z and Saint Seiya anime theme songs.
Masatoshi: Jamiroquai. My mother used to listen to it.
Kiyozumi: The original soundtrack of the Final Fantasy game. I was impressed by the various songs it included.
Finally do you have a message for the UK?
Shindy: Hello UK! I am Anli Pollicino's vocalist Shindy. The UK is a country of rock origins, and I have been influenced by many artists from the UK. I have always admired the UK very much. During 2010 European tour we sadly didn't have any show in the UK, but I really want to play there next time.
Takuma: I really admire the UK's fashion and music. I was very disappointed by the fact we couldn't go to the UK during last year's European tour, so I really want to go there next time. Please wait for us.
Yo-1: Beatles and Sex Pistols! It is an honour being able to give a message to people of the UK, which have such a deep musical history. I would really like the UK's people to listen our CD! And I am really hoping that some day we could be able to perform a live full of passion in the UK, too!
Masatoshi: I hope many people of the UK will get to know Anli Pollicino by reading this interview! I really would like to play in the UK. If somebody asks us we will go for sure!

So I came accross some old interviews, from their first European tour that I haven't wrote in the blog. I still don't know why actually hehe... but I figured it could be good to write them again here, in a fun way to wait for Kyokuto's first release! So here is the first one, they took after a live in Romania.

1. What was the best thing that happened during the last European tour?
Shindy: The moment when I saw Mont Saint-Michel in France and Sagrada Família in Spain from car window.
Takuma: In any case the concerts were the best. I really enjoyed.
Yo-1: The moment when I saw a rainbow by chance while filming PV in Sacré-Cœur basilica in Paris.
Masatoshi: The best thing was that so many guests were welcoming Anli at the concerts.
Kiyozumi: Catering service in live houses was the best! Also the landscapes of various countries that I saw from car window were great.
2. Is there a thing you didn't do during the tour but you wish you did?
Shindy: I wanted to walk on the streets and buy things if I had time.
Takuma: I guess it is about the concert in Cologne. We were supposed to film from the stage during encore, but somehow the camera wasn't recording after all. I really regret that.
Yo-1: I wish I could have been able to communicate more with many people. I’m working on my English! (Smile)
Masatoshi: I should have looked different landscapes more while moving to another destination. Buildings in Europe are so different from Japan and you can feel the history from them.
Kiyozumi: I wanted to go shopping more!
3. What was your favorite place or concert from the tour?
Shindy: The most concerts were in France and the tour was organized by French office, so I guess I made many memories in France. But of course concert in Romania was the most exciting.
Takuma: I went all the places for the first time, so I really enjoyed every city and every country that I visited.
Masatoshi: Romania of course.
Yo-1: I liked Switzerland the most, but live in Romania was the best!
Kiyozumi: I loved Paris and beautiful landscapes around Mediterranean Sea.
4. Last year you had a concert at Silver Church in Bucharest. What did you like the most about the Romanian fans?
Shindy: We had only one concert in Romania, but it was very exciting. We were the first Japanese band to perform in Romania, and I can remember the concert in Bucharest clearly. I felt everyone in Romania was very hungry for J-Rock, and it was very impressive.
Takuma: I was surprised how enthusiastic the audience was.
Yo-1: I felt like Romanian people need something like music to become one and get crazy about it together!
Masatoshi: The concert was very exciting. Audience's power was overwhelming.
Kiyozumi: Romanian people were very friendly and kind. The concert was also very exciting so I am very thankful! Let's make it ever more exciting concert when we go to Romania next time.
5. If you could go to another world wide tour where would you go?
Shindy: As long as there are Anli fans, I would go anywhere.
Takuma: I would go any country invited.
Yo-1: I would go anywhere, if there are any Anli fans.
Masatoshi: England would be interesting.
Kiyozumi: I loved France, Germany and Romania so I would like to go there again! I also want to play in Finland, Taiwan, Philippines and Brazil.
6. The fans are looking forward for a new single or PV. Is there something coming up soon?
Shindy: Yes, we are working on new songs and other new things right now, so look forward to it.
Takuma: Yes, we have lots of things going on right now. Please wait and look forward to it.
Yo-1: We are working on new things right now! Please look forward to it.
Masatoshi: We are working on it right now. Please wait!
Kiyozumi: Of course! We are carrying our new plan forward right now.
7. What plans do you have for the future?
Shindy: Becoming the coolest visual rock band in Japan.
Takuma: Future... I don't really know about the future. Living in the moment is important.
Yo-1: For the sake of delivering “Anli Rock” to the world, we continue playing awesome songs at awesome concerts!
Masatoshi: To become a band that is loved throughout the world.
Kiyozumi: I want to play in the biggest places in Japan, like Nihon Budoukan and Tokyo Dome! Of course I want to make a world tour too.
8. What is the band you would like to tour with?
Shindy: Anyone with proper rock spirit.
Takuma: I don’t really have one.
Yo-1: I don’t care as long as it is a cool band!
Masatoshi: I don’t have one especially.
Kiyozumi: I would like to go on a tour with world-famous rock bands if possible. In case of a close band, it would be amusing to go on a tour with FEST VAINQUEUR (ex Sincrea) because we used to belong in the same office.
9. Do you have any secret skills that your fans aren’t aware of?
Shindy: Cooking is my strong point.
Takuma: Yes. But it is a secret for now.
Yo-1: Singing! I would like everybody to hear my chorus work with Shindy more.
Masatoshi: I don't have any, so I want to learn technique that would surprise everyone.
Kiyozumi: Since I am playing only rock music in Anli, I would like to try to play bossa nova and jazz drums.
10. How the members met each others to form the band?
Shindy: I met Kiyozumi at live house in Tokyo. Then we asked my old band members Takuma and Yo-1 to form a session band together. After that, Masatoshi formally joined the band in August 2009 after playing a whole year in the band as a support bassist.
Takuma: There were friends and meetings by chance at live houses. That is how we combined.
Yo-1: I was asked by my old friends Shindy, Takuma and Kiyozumi to form Anli Pollicino at the time when I was already giving up my dream of music. That was the start. I denied at first, but after seeing them play few times I wanted to make music with them and joined to band.
Masatoshi: I was the last one to join the band. Certain phone call from Shindy was the beginning for me.
Kiyozumi: Everything started when I met Shindy in Ikebukuro Cyber live house in Tokyo. After that, Shindy and I kept contacting each other and Anli Pollicino started to form.

Shindy: Takuma = Small

12. What was your favorite thing to do when you were a kid?
Shindy: I used to draw alone and make up fairytales.
Takuma: I used to cosplay anime characters.
Yo-1: Playing games.
Masatoshi: I played weapon trading with Lego blocks with my friends. (Laughter)
Kiyozumi: I made a lot of Gundam plastic models!
13. What was the most stupid thing you did as a kid?
Shindy: While going up the stairs at the station, I was told by my mother not to run, because it is dangerous. I didn't care and run, and slipped and got hurt very badly. I guess I was 3 years old... Ambulance was called and I went to the hospital and got my lip stitched.
Takuma: I tried to use a cat as my pillow, but the cat got angry and scratched my face. The wound was stitched.
Masatoshi: I was lazy and decided to wear my swimsuit at home already when going to swim in a pool. But later I realized that I had forgotten pants to wear on my way back home and it was very troublesome.
Yo-1: My belt got stuck in iron fence and I ended up hanging in the air.
Kiyozumi: I rolled up a girl's skirt and teacher got angry at me.
14. What did you want to be when you were a child?
Shindy: Journalist.
Takuma: Architect.
Yo-1: Archeologist or novelist.
Masatoshi: Architect.
Kiyozumi: Pilot.
15. Please say a word to your fans.
Shindy: Dear Romanian Anli fans, how are you? We will return to Romania some day. That time we will present you even hotter Anli Rock, so please look forward to it.
Takuma: Thank you for the many memories that I made during the last year's European tour. We will do our best to be able to return to Romania in the near future, so let's make it a very hot live next time.
Yo-1: Thank you for many comments and messages! We promise to deliver our mind and heart by songs and during the concerts.
Masatoshi: We will do our best to be able to play in Romania again soon. I would be glad if you are looking forward to it. Take care of yourselves until then!

Luck is what people need. The same goes for the five young men of Anli Pollicino! During a lovely night in Tokyo, the guys had started a little promotion campagne for themselves, yet unknowing that a French concert-organizer would cross their path and, quite impressed as he was by the provoking quintet, offer them to make a tour around Europe for a month. For the many active musicians that dwell around Tokyo, getting such a chance is like winning the lottery. The young band got this opportunity thrown in their lap, something others have to wait years for, and naturally the combination took this chance. On a rainy Sunday, they played in the club Feierwerk in Munchen.
Completely excited we hasted ourselves to Munchen, meeting an authentic, sympathic band after the show.
R: What were your thoughts about Europe before you came here?
Yo-1: I had the premonition that the crowds would be very enthusiastic and exciting. Only now I know, that I had been right!
Takuma: I was wondering how tall the people in Europe would be. But now I’m here, I realize that not everyone’s tall. You however are very tall!
R (lady): I’m not very tall… I’m cheating with my shoes – look! (grins)
Shindy: Sadistic shoes! (Laughs)
R: Maybe… but these shoes are very suited for concerts! (grins)
Shindy: You could walk across bodies with those shoes, right?
R: Of course!
Shindy: I would like to get trampled by you. (Laughs)
R: Really? – (A short pause to wipe away the tears of laughter) – Next one, please!
Masatoshi: I was only thinking about the fact that many artists I worship come from Europe, so I instantly connected Europe to Music.
R: When you think back on your touring days, what is the first that comes to mind?
Masatoshi: The rain! It always rains here. We haven’t seen any sun in Europe yet. Especially in Romania the weather was bad.
Shindy: I was mainly surprised to see dogs walking around freely here. Normally a dog belongs on a leash, right? It doesn’t seem to be like that in Romania.
Yo-1: Potatoes and bread! (Laughs)
Kiyozumi: The most impressive things here are the bathrooms. Here there are bathtubs wherever you go. Of course we have those too, but in Japan we also have bathrooms that are only equipped with a shower.
Translator: Is it alright, if two members of the band go and buy cigarettes quickly?
R: Sure! (Since the editor of the text had already noticed that there were smokers in the band, she had allowed herself to light a cigarette, after which a few guys from the band also excused themselves to equip themselves with smokes… Actually the funny thing about the situation was, that the band seemed to have been controlling themselves till the editor offered the opportunity for their ‘rudeness’. We had been told beforehand that the band was extremely happy with our coming, and it was to be expected and now seemed quite obvious that such a young band was dealing with quite some nerves. ) Now, back to the question at hand!
Takuma: When we were on our first day in Paris, Masatoshi, our translator (and manager) and I visited the Sacre-Coeur. We also went inside, and there was a sign hanging there that said it was forbidden to take pictures or film inside. I however did not care, and tried to take a picture anyway. Suddenly a supervisor came running up to us, who only yelled: “Hey Madame! Hey Madame, don’t shoot pictures! … Delete your pictures…” She actually called me “Madame”! (Laughs)
R: Please imagine that you run into God, the Almighty. What would you ask him?
Shindy: Why am I ‘me’? ((Or ‘Why am I here?’, I am not completely sure.))
Kiyozumi: Why can’t I fly? (Laughs) But I guess the answer to that is simple: because I don’t have wings. (Laughs)
Masatoshi: Why do people have only two nipples? (Laughs) A dog has more of them too, you know? So why do we have so few? (Laughs)
Yo-1: Why are you God? How did you become like that? How can one become God? (Laughs)
Takuma: I want to have an extra finger, so I can play guitar incredibly well. So my question is: Why did Thou only give me five fingers?! I want one more!
R: Please imagine that you get marooned on a small island. Which five things would you bring?
Kiyozumi: Five girls! (Laughs) Or… Condoms, a magazine and three girls… (Laughs)
Masatoshi: A PC, a mouse, a scanner, a printer, a monitor and batteries.
R: Sorry, that’s six things! (Grins)
Remark by the translator: That doesn’t matter, since I don’t think there’ll be any electricity on the island. (Laughs)
Shindy: A cell phone, a PC (or notebook), a dog, a knife and a suitcase. (Laughs)
R: Why a suitcase?
Shindy: For Sightseeing! (Laughs) So I can tour the island comfortably! (Laughs)
Takuma: An airplane! (Laughs)
Remark by the translator: Wouldn’t a helicopter be more useful?
Takuma: You’re right, so a helicopter it is, and then I also want to take a friend, a pet, Ramen and a lighter.
Kiyozumi: I would like to take my first answer back. I’d rather take five women with me! (Laughs)
Yo-1: I would take a friendly lion with me.
All: EEEEEHHH????
Yo-1: … two chickens. (Since the translator wasn’t sure whether the English word ‘chicken’ was only for the meat, he tried to explain it to me in a different way, with enthusiastic support and background noises from the band… At this moment, it was quite like being on a jolly farm. – Note from interviewer)
Translator: What are the chickens for?
Yo-1: For fresh eggs.
R: Good thinking!
Yo-1: … a fire and a frying pan… To get back on that lion: It would only be friendly to me and protect me from the other wild animals on the island. That’s the whole reason for it. (Laughs)
Remark by the others: You want to be the God on your own island. (Laughs)
R: Please imagine, you get to make three wishes. What would you wish for?
Takuma: I only have one wish. I want to become a wizard, so I could fulfill all my own wishes. (Laughs)
Yo-1: I would wish for the ability to speak every language in the world, to know everything about the world and to be blessed with Ultimate fluency of speaking.
Kiyozumi: A time machine! (Laughs) So much money I wouldn’t be able to spend it and all the Natto (fermented soy-beans) I could ever eat.
Masatoshi: Health, World peace and glory for Germany! (Laughs)
Shindy: I want to become a vampire and have a special credit card, one that can open all doors and with which I can buy everything I want, and also an Art Platinum-card. When I’d possess these two cards, I could be the King of my own country and could get, so to say, anything I want. (Laughs)
R: Please imagine, that we’d exchange places now. What would you ask yourselves in turn?
Masatoshi: Why is Kiyozumi so perverse? (Laughs)
Shindy: ... because he is Kiyozumi. (Laughs)
Kiyozumi: My brains simply aren’t perfect. One half thinks normally, the other half can only think of sex. And when I watch myself in the mirror, well… (Grins, Laughs)
Yo-1: Why actually do we play in Anli Pollicino?
All: Fate!
Kiyozumi: Why is Yo-1 always laughing?
Masatoshi: He’s simply adorable! (Laughs)
Takuma: For how long do you want to sleep tonight? (Laughs)
Shindy: Seven hours!
R: Seven hours? Are you really Japanese?
Shindy: Why?
R: Wherever I go I’m being told that I sleep so much, but I only sleep about six hours a night. Everyone always tells me that three hours is enough.
Shindy: They’ve been telling you fairytales! (Laughs) In Japan people always work very hard, and that’s how you get myths about (no) sleep.
R: Then we learned something new today! How about the others?
Yo-1: I want to sleep for ten hours – like usual!
Masatoshi: 24 hours! (Laughs)
Kiyozumi: I’m Japanese… so a second! (Laughs)
Takuma: Well, five hours should be alright.
Shindy: Who is your favorite person or favorite artist?
Kiyozumi: Miya Miyazawa.
R: Sorry, don’t know her!
Kiyozumi: Okay, then I’ll go for Hillary Clinton. (Laughs)
